  Cascades Elementary School

Mission Statement:  We, the Cascades/Frost School community, are dedicated to the educational development of each child. We hold that ALL students will learn the essential academic and social skills necessary for success in the world.

 Principal:

Mr. Ed Peterson was born in Marquette, Michigan, earned his Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, a Master's degree from Oakland University and did graduate work at the University of Michigan. He taught all elementary grades for 22 years in Flint, Michigan before serving as principal at T.A. Wilson School from 1991-2001. Mr. Peterson served as assistant principal at Northeast and Hunt elementary schools from 2001 - 2005.

 

Mr. Peterson has worked in various educational capacities including environmental education, multi-aged programs and gifted and talented programs. In addition to his career in education, Mr. Peterson served two years as a Peace Corp volunteer in the Republic of the Philippines. He has published educational materials for teaching, including, 1001 Ideas for the Elementary Classroom.

 History:

Cascades school was built in 1951. The school was named for its close proximity to Jackson’s Cascades Falls. 

 Demographics:

Cascades School is located in a neighborhood setting on South Wisner Street, next to beautiful Cascades Park. Cascades became part of the Frost/Cascades complex in 2003, and is a School of Choice that currently has a diverse population of approximately 300 students in twelve classrooms, serving Kindergarten through Second grade.

 Curriculum:

Cascades focuses on providing students with a wonderful beginning education in the basics and continues to do so with our Accelerated Reader program, which was pioneered for the district. There is one Special Needs classroom. Cascades Elementary School features an auditorium and gymnasium that doubles as our school cafeteria.
