Mission Statement:   We will inspire and educate all students to be responsible and diverse citizens.

Principal:

Mrs. Frances L. Reeves has been part of the Jackson Public Schools family for over 35 years as a teacher and administrator. Mrs. Reeves holds several degrees in the area of curriculum, early childhood, school administration and has earned several certificates in science and technology, as well as various other areas of education and community awards. Mrs. Reeves was named ”Jackson Public Schools Administrator of the Year” in 2003.

History:

McCulloch Elementary School, formerly known as Francis Street School, was built in 1866. The original structure was destroyed in a fire in the late 1940’s and was replaced with the current building in 1950. The named was changed to McCulloch Academy of Technology and Science in 2003 – 2004.

 Demographics:

McCulloch School is a unique inner city school located near downtown Jackson.  It serves approximately 150 students in Preschool through fifth grades and is located within walking distance of historical downtown Jackson. Our students are able to walk to the Michigan Theater, Story fest, Y-Center and the Library. Our academy is a neighborhood school with 90% of the students living within walking distance. McCulloch has a diverse student population.

 Curriculum:

The curriculum at McCulloch is set forth by Jackson Public Schools, which is aligned to the State of Michigan Standards and Benchmarks. All staff members have received Intel Teach to the Future training, as well as taken many workshops in the area of Science. In addition to a complete computer lab, all of the classrooms are equipped with a unique media cart to enhance learning experiences. Technology is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum so students can gain the confidence and skills they need in today's technological society. Science themes are used throughout the curriculum to spark student interest and create curiosity in the following areas: Botany, Zoology, Geology, Meteorology, Physics, Chemistry and Aerospace.  McCulloch Academy is moving to the future as Technology and Science Academy and has added a Strings Program, Foreign Language (Spanish) and a Dance Program.

Of Special Interest:

In 2002-2003, McCulloch Academy received a grant; Coalition of Essential Schools/Comprehensive School Reform, that provides all staff a Professional Learning Community, offering Best Practices, current data and excellent Staff Professional Development. McCulloch Academy has numerous partnerships with area businesses and a strong Parent/Teacher organization. Students enjoy supplemental academic programs such as, Winner Walk Talk, CP Credit Union, Junior Achievement, health care programs, after-school programs and mentoring.

It is our greatest pleasure to provide your child with integrated science and technology learning opportunities, so that every student can achieve success and be an effective contributor to society. I look forward to working with your child at McCulloch Academy.

 

I have been part of the Jackson Public Schools family for 34 years as a teacher and administrator. I have several degrees in the area of curriculum, early childhood, school administration and several certificates in science and technology and various other areas of education and community awards. My most outstanding award was being selected as the 2003 Jackson Public Schools Administrator of the Year.

 

Our primary goals at McCulloch Academy, student achievement, student success and parent involvement are key in your child's academic success.

 

McCulloch Academy of Technology and Science will prepare your child for the 21st Century by developing skills in problem solving, research and critical thinking. Students using their minds well in a positive, encouraging learning community will support our goals of student achievement and success.
