JHS Add/Drop Policy

  • JHS school counselors strongly encourage parents, counselors, and classroom teachers to be active participants in students’ course selections.  All necessary information, including teacher recommendations, career pathways, skills and aptitudes, and possible post-secondary options, must be considered in the decision-making process.

The scheduling process is not only important to the student and their success but also the determination of our teacher assignments and budget decisions each year.  It is for these reasons that we stress to our students and their parents/guardians the necessity to consider all course selections final at the conclusion of the request process.

Schedules for the upcoming school year are available in early August.  Any teacher requests must be made by June 15 of the upcoming school year.  When schedules are distributed in early August, they are considered final.

However, we also know there will be circumstances that require a change to the schedule.  Students can initiate a schedule change if one or more of the following criteria are satisfied:

    • The student has not met the prerequisites as stated for the particular course.

    • The student, teacher, and counselor agree the student has been enrolled in a course which is above and beyond OR below the students’ capabilities to succeed.

    • The student has failed a previous course OR met the course requirements during summer school.

    • The student has “tested out” of a course on his/her schedule.

    • The student has been assigned to a course that was not requested during the scheduling request process or where credit has already been earned for the class.

    • A teacher request submitted by the request due date of June 15 was not honored and can be adjusted in the student’s schedule.

    • Advanced Placement (AP) courses are considered full-year courses, and students are not permitted to opt out during any trimester unless justified by extenuating circumstances (administrator approval is required).

    • Career center courses are considered full-year courses, and students are not permitted to opt out during any trimester unless justified by extenuating circumstances (administrator approval is required).
