Jeremy Patterson, Principal

Greetings, and welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year.  My name is Jeremy Patterson, Principal for Instruction. This will be my sixth year leading Middle School at Parkside and my 14th year in Administration with Jackson Public Schools.

We are excited about the professional learning environment and opportunities for growth at Parkside.  For the upcoming school year, JPS will be using the “Flipped Classroom” model for instruction. Students will be provided with technology to take home every day.  6th - 8th-grade students will be assigned a Chromebook that will be returned at the end of the year. Students will use their devices in class and take them home each week to complete assignments on their at-home learning days. Instruction will be provided five days a week online. Two days a week students will receive in-person individual instruction with their subject area teachers and in small groups to reach mastery. This provides JPS with the flexibility to meet the individual needs of students, to step forward into a full-time face-to-face as well as a step backward into a full-time at-home instruction as directed by State and local officials.

Your child will be assigned to group A or Group B based on home address, balancing course offerings, siblings attending JPS schools, and other variables.  Students in Cohort A will come to school on Monday and Tuesday and work from home with directions from staff on Wednesday thru Friday.  Cohort B will work at home Monday thru Wednesday with directions from staff and come to school on Thursday and Friday.  We had a successful summer school experience with this model and look forward to fully implementing this flipped classroom model for the upcoming school year. Our teachers learned a lot from the Spring of 2020 on what we did well and how we can improve our delivery of instruction.  Your feedback in that process was invaluable!  Through the use of Google Classroom and IXL, we believe we will have a more streamlined approach to learning at school and at home.

To protect the health of staff and students, we will follow protective measures prescribed by the Michigan Department of Education Roadmap and JPS Return to Learn Committee including social distancing, frequent hand washing/sanitizing, reducing class sizes to 15 or fewer, mandatory masks for all staff and students, and deep sanitization of classrooms, buses, and all common areas.

This will be my first of three years working with the class of 2027. I look forward to working closely with our 6th-grade students and getting to know their personal, social, and academic needs well. Ms. Jill Weatherwax will be the 7th-grade Assistant Principal, her second year with the Class of 2026.  Mrs. Krista Jarvey will be the 8th Grade Associate Principal, her third year with the Class of 2025. All three administrators will have a shared responsibility leading Fourth Street Learning Center in the same fashion we lead Parkside.

Your communication and participation in your student’s education is essential to our success! All parents, guardians, and volunteers for education are a welcomed part of our school improvement process. We encourage you to join our PAVE (Parkside Adult Volunteers for Education) group. I look forward to partnering with you and your student this year. We will all get through the trials and tribulations, as well as the celebrations and accomplishments, together!

Working towards a better tomorrow,
