Jeremy Patterson, Principal

Dear Fourth Street Families:

Greetings, and welcome back to the 2021-2022 school year.  My name is Jeremy Patterson, Principal for Instruction of both Fourth Street Learning Center and Middle School at Parkside. This will be my seventh year leading at the Middle School level and my 15th year in Administration with Jackson Public Schools.

We are excited about the professional learning environment and opportunities for growth at Fourth Street.  For the upcoming school year, JPS will continue using the “Flipped Classroom” model for instruction. Students will be provided with technology to take home every day.  6th - 8th grade students will be assigned a Chromebook that will be returned at the end of the year. Students will use their device in class and take them home each week to complete assignments on their at-home learning days. Instruction will be provided five days a week online. Two or three days a week students will receive in person individual instruction with their subject area teachers and in small groups to reach mastery. (See attached calendar of in person and virtual days per cohort) This provides 4SLC with flexibility to meet the individual needs of students, to step forward into a full-time face-to-face as well as step backwards into a full-time at home instruction as defined by individual student needs and progress towards social and academic goals.

Your child will be assigned to Cohort A or Cohort B based on home address, balancing class sizes, and other variables.  Students in Cohort B will come to school on Wednesday August 25 - Friday August 27, and work from home with directions/meetings from staff on Monday/Tuesday, August 30 & 31.  Cohort A will work at home on Wednesday, August 25 - Friday August 27 with directions from staff and come to school on Monday August 30 - Wednesday September 1. Further scheduling of in person and at home learning days will be communicated to you on a trimester basis, however, the format of three days in person and two days home (and vise versa) will remain consistent.  All families are encouraged to attend our Open House on Monday, August 23rd from 4:30-6:00 p.m.  The open house will provide you with an opportunity to hear our plans for the school year and visit with your child’s teachers/staff.  Please RSVP at 517-841-2300.  Pizza and beverages will be served during the open house.

To protect the health of staff and students, we will follow protective measures prescribed by the Department of Health and Human Services and JPS Return to Learn Committee including

social distancing, frequent hand washing/sanitizing, reducing class sizes, optional mask wearing for all staff and students, and deep sanitization of classrooms, buses and all common areas.

I look forward to working closely with our 4SLC students and getting to know their personal, social, and academic needs well. Mr. Robert Bertke will be the 8th grade Assistant Principal, and Mrs. Krista Jarvey will be the 6th Grade Associate Principal. All three administrators will have a shared responsibility leading Fourth Street Learning Center in the same fashion we lead Parkside.  Also, new this year, Parkside extracurricular offerings such as clubs and sports will be available to your students as long as they meet the social and academic qualifications.

Your communication and participation in your student’s education is essential to our success! All parents, guardians and volunteers for education are a welcomed part of our school improvement process.  I look forward to partnering with you and your student this year!

With Viking Pride,

Jeremy Patterson
